She is there......I am almost there.......

Thank you, friends, for your travel prayers today.  Willa has arrived safely to the wedding weekend destination....bringing both the bride and the groom and a couple of groomsmen.

We are so excited to get to see them!

I have safely arrived in one of the most famous cities in the world:  San Francisco.  My other best friend lives here....with my little godson, and the rest of their family.......so we get a very short bonus visit.  We plan to come back for a slightly longer visit on Sunday evening.

I have the maid of honor and two of the bridesmaids.

I also have a completely empty camera.......ready to take lots of wedding weekend pictures.

It was an uneventful ride down here........about a five and a half hour drive.......what with a couple of short stops.  I was never tired......but boy did I finally succumb to exhaustion when I sat down at the kitchen table.

And.......that is where I am right now......ready to go to bed......actually typing in bed.

And so I shall say good night........I expect I will awaken naturally about sevenish or so......and then we hit the road for the second leg of the trip.........which is about seven hours away, south, down the 101.  Our hotel awaits us......with pool and spa.  Looking forward to that!

I hear there is a girls' night for the bridal party and friends.........

Goodnight & God Bless,

                             Chari

PS  No pictures today.......but definitely tomorrow.

Oh!  Today someone used the keywords: careless driving mortal sin to find their way over to TUAR.  Go figure.  :)

A Road Trip Kind-of-Day

Both Willa and I are on the road today.....with the same destination in mind:  a wedding weekend!

I will try to post when I can.....even if it is just a picture.

Prays for travels would be appreciated.

See ya'll soon!

Blessings,

California Notebook Pages and Plans

I want my younger boys to study the state they live in, so I am working on a California notebook page series.  Here are the first and second pages.  I am learning that some notebook pages come easy, and some are really tough to put together.  This one was a tougher one for some reason.  I think there were so many resources to choose from, and few that seemed utterly ideal.

 page 1

At USA-Printables I found several nice maps and other things.  I used them for the maps on this front page.

I also printed a map of our own part of the state, which you can see on the top right, but I won't link to it;  it wouldn't be relevant since you (I am pretty sure) don't live where we do in California.  But since we are going to have some nature study pages in future to study our local habitat, I thought that would be a good start.

For the foldable flower thing on the bottom right I used:  California State Mini-Lapbook (Dollar Menu)

You can see how it opens to show key facts about the state.   And there is another printable map which fit inside nicely.

page 2

A State Symbol flap book (from California State Mini-Lapbook)
A State Wheel (Enchanted Learning)

How the State Symbol Book looks when it is open -- there are two layers, one with a picture and one with information

A State motto, song and nickname activity sheet you can find on HomeschoolHelper -- it folds from a circle into a triangle.   I glued it in the wrong way -- oh well.

Plans for the Future:

For future California notebooking, I want to have a page on California habitats (this could connect with an animal study -- Paddy is very interested in animals right now) and a page on California landmarks (especially the ones we've been to) and an overview page on California history (missions, Gold Rush, etc) -- then we could go into more detail in the future as we cover that time period in our history studies.

Also I would like to have notebook pages for other states we have visited.

Free and Semi-Free California (and general US State) Resources

There are also a lot of California resources at Enchanted Learning.  Unfortunately, many are subscriber-only.   But you can find a summary of California information that can help you fill out the activities for the Homeschool Helper lapbook.

Also it is worth looking at Quizlet when you want your child to study facts in an easy way.   I found:

Also Two on California Regions with Pictures!

Flashback Nature Walk

A couple of days ago, I was looking for something on my old blog, Our Hearts' Haven, when I came across a "thirty pictures in April" theme........(click there for the link)

I had so much fun looking at the pictures, I decided to link to them here for Elisa's Nature Walk this week.  Do think about joining Elisa!

If you do bother to follow the link (and I cannot blame you if you don't), you will see some awesome photos.  Just start at the bottom and scroll up, from April 1st to the 30th......read if you want, for explanation.......but just peek.  God's bounty of beauty is such a treat......and the man-made stuff is quite inspired as well.  Really.  I keep thinking that the next time I get to San Francisco, I want to get back to these lovely spots. I want to relive the experience, with my children older.

We had gone on a trip south and many of these pics were taken while visiting a beautiful little gem of a church in San Rafael, California.

There are also photos from two different visits to the Sacramento River, in Redding and in Sacramento, as well as from our excursions to Muir Beach and Muir Woods (see the wonderful California Redwoods!)

Please let me know if you did go to peek.....and tell me which of the photos were your favorite.  :)

Blessings!!

              Chari

PS.......Between Willa's travels and a bad cold.....and my working way more than usual.....and endless chauffering.....oh, and those pesky Internet issues at my home.....and a major application to get in for my senior.....we are a bit quiet.  Life, it sure does happen!

Home(schooling) Away From Home

Kieron Ryan and Garrett Bryan

For the past year or so, my family has spent a lot of time on the road or away from home.   My husband contracts with a company located in Oregon, and while he can work at home most of the time, things go better when he regularly shows up on site.  Sometimes he travels up from California by himself, other times we go with him.

Last year I was also spending quite a bit of time up in Alaska with my mother.   Part of the time my kids stayed with their Dad, either in California or in Oregon, but part of the time they were with me.

All this adds up to a lot of departures from our normal routine.  Homeschooling obviously has huge benefits when your life requires this kind of temporal-spatial flexibility.  But of course, homeschooling in flux has its own set of challenges.  How do you homeschool when you are on the road?

Here, in no particular order, are a few suggestions for those who are spending a lot of their family time on the road or otherwise away from home.

First, invest some of your homeschool funds in Kindles for the kids!

This doesn't replace books on your shelves, obviously.   I don't think there are studies out showing that having Kindles gives kids a learning advantage, as having as few as 25 books on a shelf in your home apparently does.

Still, a Kindle is basically a library in your purse or backpack, without the back strain.    And it works out nicely that the 19th century treasure trove of classic fiction for children and adults is all Free!  In Public Domain!    And most library systems now have Kindle book borrow capacity, though in my system I have to wade through all kinds of dreck (vampire chronicles) to find the occasional decent read (Ranger's Apprentice).

My 9 year old in particular takes his Kindle everywhere.   Right now he is reading Children of Odin, because all the Avengers' movies have made him interested in Norse myths.

Of course, you can just get one family Kindle and share it, but there are advantages to having devoted Kindles.  My 9 year old has a completely different booklist than my 16 year old, and both are different again from my booklist.

IPads are cool too, but more expensive, and more distracting, I think, because there are all those apps.   I hope to get some facsimile tablet computer at some point, but I won't regret having the Kindles.

Second, try checking out the local thrift stores at the place where you are staying!

Especially, if you, like me, live in a rural mountain area with no thrift stores within 50 miles.   Here I've found enough decent childrens' books to stock a small bookshelf, and on our last trip to Goodwill, we found some great board games (complete with no missing parts) at between a dollar and two dollars.  Games are great to fill in those restless moments when the children start missing their home territory.

Tumble, Chinese Checkers, Sorry!, Mancala, Harry Potter Trivia, Poker Set, and Might Magnets all for about 10 dollars

You can also buy inexpensive art and office supplies, and even unused workbooks.    I got my 4th grader one of those skills workbooks so we can do a few minutes of math and grammar here and there.  ... which is about as much as we do at home.

Thirdly, take advantages of local nature walks, art galleries, musical or dramatic events or camps

I put this in for the sake of completeness and because this is Chari's blog as well as mine, and that is what she would do.   And OK, I do it a little, but I am not a natural tourist or cultural seeker.    When my husband gets into tourist mode, we do a lot more than I would on my own.   When we went to Lake Tahoe this summer we went on the lake in a steamboat, and on one of those gondola ski lift things to the summit of the local hill/mountain, and to a concert.   Plus, we walked around the city quite a bit.   No matter where you are or what your budget, there's usually something to be seen, even the local playground or park.

This applies to when you are on the road, too, of course.  You can make little detours along the way.

I have a friend who has her kids keep travel journals or scrapbooks.    I haven't done this, but it would be fun to keep a family travel scrapbook.   Some people keep a travel blog, which Chari and I basically do in bits and pieces right here : ).

Fourthly, if possible, visit relatives and old friends, and maybe meet some new people!

Maybe they will give you cookies and coffee!

Or let you hang around with their kitties

Fifthly, for those hours on the road, bring audio books or lectures

We have listened to Lord of the Rings several times over the years, as well as a variety others.  More recently, some historical or scientific Great Courses have gone over quite well.

Then there is always music, or conversation (just recently I ended up having a GREAT religious conversation with one of my teenagers that probably wouldn't have happened had he not been the only one awake in the car besides me during a night journey).

Aidan always insists on bringing lots of coloring pages of cars.   You can google photos of the vehicle (or horse or whatever) of your child's choice, and then convert them to sketches at Photo Pencil Sketch.   Print them out and you have a fairly adequate page for coloring.

Then of course, there is your IPhone where if you don't mind your kids getting the screen sticky, you can load your choice of entertainment or edutainment apps to while away some time.

Listening to my teenagers' music colleection is always interesting and conducive to conversation -- an eclectic combo ranging from Weird Al to game soundtracks to Frank Sinatra to Johny Cash to Les Miserables.

Then, you can always try Non-Schooling!

That could be defined here as just living your normal family life, but in a different place.  Definitely, we've done a lot of that during the past year.   And  I will just mention that it is no small thing to live a normal (and functional) family life outside of your normal habitat.     When we come to Oregon, my littler ones get to be around their oldest brothers, which is precious and not to be despised.   And living in closer quarters (with neighbors behind the walls) and sleeping on air mattresses brings out a slightly different social skill set than we normally rely on.    So we could define Non-Schooling more positively as Family Schooling or maybe Family Living.

Aidan and Kieron having a conversation

You probably have built up various traditions for how to deal with things as a family.   Traveling is a great time to pull these out, develop them, and sometimes, realize they aren't working quite so well anymore, and consequently make changes.

Traveling itself, even if you don't go to amazing places or do a lot of amazing enrichement activities, builds up shared memories in a way nothing else does.

Just to keep it real, I am sometimes rather discouraged that our "shared memories" might be of epic squabbles or chowing down on some fast food meal..  However, from my own childhood memories of a LOT of family travels --  even the more humbling memories have a habit of gaining some gilding of laughter or connection when told and retold as part of the Family Legend.

Last but not least,

Find the local church!

Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity at TAC

I just mention that because one of my favorite things to look back at after traveling is the local church, especially if I get a chance to go to daily Mass or to step in briefly for prayer before the Tabernacle.    I love the way I can step into a Catholic church in any city and realize that His Real Presence is truly the center of all civilization, all culture, even if it is ignored, despised and rejected very often.

It is sad that many times you see sacrilege and disrespect even among those who profess His Name, but all the more reason to visit with the truest devotion you can muster, even if that is only a mite, as in my own case.   You have a chance to pray for that priest who uses his homily as a propaganda vehicle for Call to Action, or the choir that seems to think that the Mass is meant to be a backdrop for their bravura acoustics..  And very often, you can be inspired and edified by examples of reverence and insight, as well, if you just look.

And also, many times, the local church is a genuine part of history, especially if you live in California, in mission territory.

Aidan is always particularly interested in (1) the lights on the ceiling (2) the lectionary.  He often wants to take pictures of these and/or look them up on Google.

There is a Mass Times site that tells you the mass times and locations of any city or zip code, and there is a free app that is very helpful with directions and locations, and even includes daily readings and feast days.

A Couple of Links

If you look up road-schooling, you can find some helpful tips and shared experience.  A couple of links I found:

Several of these tips can also be applied to situations where you are waiting, say in a doctor's office or during one kid's athletic or other travels.  If you live in a somewhat rural habitat, like Chari and I do, you probably have to travel a ways for your child's games, or orthodontist's appointments, or therapy, and the challenges and benefits are somewhat the same.

If you feel inclined, share your road-schooling or car-schooling tips in the comments!

Bryans & Ryans: June 2012, Day One

Early morning in Siskiyou County!  I, Willa, got up early and went out to read my Magnificat with this great view.

Chari had to work today (which is actually yesterday now) so I  tried to photo-journal what our boys were doing, while also reading some of Chari's homeschooling and Catholic books.

Garrett and Kieron worked for several hours at building a computer from an instruction manual and some spare parts from other computers.

Paddy and Malachy played several board games.

Paddy and Malachy also spent a lot of time in the garage.   Does playing with new kittens count as Nature Study?  Since my family is petless right now, I am glad Paddy gets a chance to be around baby animals!

In the evening, Malachy had baseball practice (he is on the All Star Team for his division) and Paddy was bored, so Chari suggested drawing.  Paddy drew a portrait of himself and Malachy swinging, and perhaps you can spot Chari's eldest son Matthew in the picture, too?   Sarah, can you? : D

Aidan spends a lot of time on the Bryans' front porch being thoughtful.  Here he is on the porch swing and later, sitting on one of his coolers drawing a picture.  Perhaps you can spot me in that one!

A note from Chari:  Like that my oldest son solved the daily dinner dilemma by asking this morning, before I was off to a few hours at work:

Would you like me to make pizza for dinner tonight?

 Heck, yeah!

The boy is very serious about his pizza!
Inspired by his visit to Naples, he makes individual gourmet pizzas,
called "the four seasons"

Mmmmm!
He makes his own pizza sauce from scratch, in the blender.
 It is delicious!

The chef and his sibling assistant, enjoying their pizzas after all have been served.
Out of doors and with a glass of wine, of course.  :)

Chari and I took another two miles walk, on along the railroad.....a Nature Walk, really.  Hoepfully we can post that blog tomorrow.

Blessings!

                           Willa & Chari

PS Please pray for Stacey, Chari's friend.....who is trying not to deliver a 28 week old baby, named Nathan Joel.  Her water broke two weeks ago, so they at least were able to buy him two more weeks in utero.  Thanks!

Bryans & Ryans: June 2012........Day 1/2

Sunday, June 17

So, Willa and I thought we would blog about our doings each day while we are together.......activities, conversations, discussions (those are two different animals ;)  ), play, meals.....etc

We sat down last night about 11:11pm, and found we were both too exhausted to write after all.  That was okay.......we could do it today.  Very funny.  We find ourselves still too tired to think.  Maybe it is that "day after driving all day" kind of thing.....I drove all day on Saturday, Willa on Sunday........perhaps more likely it is the fact that our little boys were still chatting away at midnight....and then woke Willa up at 7am (Whaaaat?  They did not sleep in????).  I was chasing a chicken out of the garden at 6am.......after having one of those after midnight good chats with the husband.  Yeah, that must be it.

Anyway, Willa made good time yesterday and arrived safely at my house early enough for us to have almost half of a day's worth of visiting.  (Thank you for those travel prayers).  I spent the day making sure my house was cleaner than it was when I had awakened.  I know that I do not need to clean it for Willa's visit, but it is so much easier to live in the house with extra people hanging about if you have basic clean.

Let's see......in our long evening, Willa helped me to get my laundry on the line, kept me company while I chopped veggies for our stir-fry (she did offer to help, but I did not share the tasks), take a two mile walk with me.........

.........and wander along our garden fence just after dusk, where we saw one of these spiders every few feet on the fence.  With the natural lighting, and our angle, the spiders looked as if they were suspended above the horizon.  The photo does not show this very well.  Even though we are both very grown up, and even though we did not have any of our children with us, we will still take notice of nature study opportunities......even just for ourselves.  :)

The littlest boys (Paddy Ryan, 9 & Malachy Bryan, 10) wandered about our property and eventually came back to the house where they discovered the Wii. That made them happy till bedtime, which took forever to complete.  I read a picture book to them, one I picked up from the library, and then we settled them with books, Kindles and flashlights.  In the end, they kept chatting and chatting.......much too late for wee folk.  And their mothers!

The bigger boys (Kieron R, 16 & Garrett B, 15) found themselves much to talk about.......still talking after midnight.  A little basketball......and a lot of talk.

Aidan, the in-between fella at age 13 years, checked out the new kittens, organized his coolers on my porch, hung out on our porch swing.......and went to bed later than usual for him.

Once the three littles were somewhat settled in bed, Willa and I stared at our computer screens, but nothing came. So we went to bed........

And that is how we got here, to this moment.

Did I mention yet, how Willa and I were going to keep tame bedtimes for the kids and I?

Night one:  FAIL.  :)

Tonight is looking better......but I do hear those little men voices again....sigh.

Hopefully tomorrow, Willa & I will have more focus.  :)
Blessings,

We've Set a Date! Two Dates, In Fact!

I am pleased to say we have reserved the dates on the calendar!

Willa and I are getting together in mid-June to spend about a week together.  It will just be the little boys and the moms.  All of the older children have other places to be.  This really will be an interesting time for us....having only five kids between us.  This visit will be our (mostly) annual (for the last five years) time of retreat.  We usually plan our next year of homeschooling together, often do a "book" or "chapter" study........and now that we blog together.....there will be some blogging time.  Yes.

We are going to try to work hard to get a little nature study in with the boys. They usually play all.day.long.....and we just go with it. It is hard to interrupt their play for outings. We enjoy our own focused time, too. That makes it twice as hard to get out. I have some good trails that I really think Aidan is going to enjoy.

I know I need this.  It will be such a blessing for us to have this time.

And then.........

.......In July, I will have all six of my children home....and Willa will come back to visit with as many of her kids as can come.  For another week!  There will be dancing, hiking, tea time..... lots of conversations....and no doubt, movies. The kids are really looking forward to this.  I am , too.

Just thought I would share..............my joy.

Spring Blessings,

                              Chari

PS:  I just realized:  Willa will be here in only 12 days!  I have a lot to get done!  I might need a list!

(All pictures of Ryan & Bryan kids are from the past......)

Bryans and Ryans Together!

While driving up to Oregon on Friday some of the Ryans did get a chance to stop by and see some of the Bryans.

It was a short visit because the Ryans had to keep driving and the Bryans were on their way to Malachy's baseball game and then to see a book talk.

I thought I would put up a picture from a looong time ago when the children were much smaller than they are now.   You can see (left to right) Clare, Paddy in front, Kieron, Aidan in front, Maddalyn, Garrett, Matthew, Sean, and Malachy in front.

I forget what game they were playing but it involved weapons as you can see.

Have a great Sunday.

Blessings on your family and friends!

The View from Up Here

I have gone up to Alaska to be with my mom whose health took a turn for the worse. As Chari mentioned, prayers would be very welcome!  Since Chari has been talking about praying for husbands, my husband is holding the fort with the kids back in Oregon so he probably would benefit from some prayers too.

I thought I would post some pictures I took yesterday during a long, beautiful sunset.   The chill has been unreal, in the negative double digits at night, and it makes the air look almost dreamlike.  I only have my IPhone camera up here and I was taking these pictures from INSIDE, thank you very much, so the quality isn't that great, but it gives you an idea.

Now that every day isn't quite so busy maybe I will have a chance to get back to posting.  Hopefully!

The little light is a ski-mobiler out on the frozen lake.  Chilly!

Grandma's House Christmas 2011

Every year my Uncle Steve designs a decorative front for my Grandma's house.  Grandma and I think 2011 is his best year yet.  It is very sweet.

Thought I would share.......it is long, at over five minutes....just take a few minutes peek.

Blessings from the Northern Californina coast,

Mucho Mushrooms in the Redwoods

We had a great day in the Redwoods today.  I took over 300 pictures........which is almost silly considering I have been in these same places so many times in the last two decades.....but I always do it anyway.  The places we visit are always in flux.....plus, we often visit at different times of the year, so there are new things to see, new perspectives to view.......

.........including so many mushrooms I had never seen before!

Those who know me well.....like my kids......know I love to photograph fungi.  I am weird that way.  And I am always forgetting that clever mushroom identification guide!

I took too many photos to share all of them on the blog.......so I thought I would at least separate the mushroom pics.  I will put the rest on Snapfish and share with a link in a later post.

I tried to identify the mushrooms with online identification guides, but I could only ID one of them.  The guides seem too incomplete for help.  I will have to pull out my own favorite guide.

In the meantime, here are my pretty and pretty interesting fungi.......

Guess which one is my favorite..........which one is yours?

Gotta get to sleep for more coastal adventure tomorrow!  Haha, tomorrow's adventure involves thrift stores and Old Towne.....but we hope to make it to a beach somehow!

     Blessings,

                     Chari
